What is an Essay Outline?

Essays are a rather common assignment in most disciplines, ranging from all fields of study. As a student, your goal is to get a good grade in your essay as this will help you get the best marks possible. This can all be done by writing a decent paper.

There are several avenues through which you will be able to achieve this. However, they all fall under the category of essay writing. On the one hand, you are presented with an essay prompt to get you started. On the other hand, you are provided with a topic to formulate your paper around. It is at this stage that you will often find yourself creating an essay outline.

Essay outlines have to do with your paper’s structure and how you will present it. Essentially, you will be putting down the main ideas you want to come out of your essay. Each section that you will find yourself writing will typically have a topic sentence to direct the reader on what they are supposed to get out of it. It follows then that this will help provide you with an idea of how the rest of the essay will proceed. However, before you get to start writing, you must ensure that your topic sentence is following the central idea of your essay.

In the introduction, you are supposed to be introducing your paper to give your essay its context. This means that you need to be making it appear as though it is part of some ongoing discussion. Therefore, you should ensure that your introduction has a question phrase as your thesis statement.

The body will then act to put down ideas that you have picked out to address in your essay. While you are required to use the essay outline method for all your chapters, it is also advisable to write down your points in a separate page. Your thesis statement will now have a starting position, which you are supposed to define by writing the most important points in italics.

After this, ensure that you write down any counterarguments that you came across during your research. It is at this point that you will go through the notes that you had compiled during your investigation. Hence you need to find the most pertinent points to support your stance.

In the conclusion, it helps you to restate your thesis statement and reiterate all the arguments that you had highlighted earlier. You will then see that the only thing left to do is tie the previous sections together coherently. You then review all your points and evaluate them one by one.

It is at this point that you will get to put down the reference list. It is also important to understand that you are expected to put down the essay in a relevant and formatted language. The paper’s format determines the level of quality that your essay will possess. Therefore, ensure that your essay is written in a way that is clear, precise, and well organized. This will ensure that your professor will be able to follow your assignment ad even if there might be minor mistakes in the English essay outline.
